Professor Man Mohan Sharma is an institution in himself, being the most decorated UDCT alumnus in the country whose life’s mission has been to serve the chemical industry and the profession of chemical science, engineering and technology.
He is a knowledge engineer with unparallel record in the annals of Chemical Engineering Research. Teaching, research and consultation have been his mantra and he has offered innumerable advices to industry and government on matters vital to the growth of chemical engineering science, education and nation at large.
Countless decorations, honors and fellowships have not stopped him from learning new things every day. Whether Moulton Medal of Institutionof Chemical Engineers (UK) (1971, 77), SS Bhatnagar prize of the CSIR for engineering sciences (1973), Padma Bhushan (1987), Fellowship of the Royal Society, London (1990), distinguished Academician Award, IIT Patna (2014) or Rajasthan Science Congress Award (2016);to cite just a few, he is as humble and inspiring educator and advisor as ever. He has 250 research papers in Chemical Engineering Science, Chemical Engineering Research and Design and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research to his credit. MMS, as he is popularly known, has supervised 71 Doctoral Thesis and 35 M Chem. Eng./ M.Sc. (Tech) Thesis.
UDCCT has been his Karma Bhumi and Chemical Engineering a RashtraKarya, MMS the unstoppable chemical engineer has brought international accolades to the Indian Chemical Engineering Profession and the University of Mumbai. He is the only engineer from the university system to be honored as Fellow of the Royal Society and UDCT and the University of Mumbai have benefitted immensely from his selfless service of the past four decades.
The Civilian award of PADMA VIBHUSHAN by the President of India on the Republic Day, the 26th January 2001 is a tribute to Professor Sharma’s monumental contribution to chemical engineering science and technology, Chemical industry and the government on important policy matters for nation building.

Note: Prof M. G. K. Menon was instrumental in setting up of VASVIK and was the Chairman of the Board of Advisors since its inception. His vision, experience and personal involvement has helped VASVIK structure & position itself as the most prominent & recognized Private Sector initiative in the field of promotion of Industrial Research & Development.
Prof. M.G.K. Menon was Minister of State for Science & Technology and for Education in the Union Cabinet during 1989-90 and Member of Parliament (1990-96). He was Member, Planning Commission and also Scientific Advisor to Prime Minister. He had a distinguished career at the University of Bristol in England working in the field of cosmic rays and elementary particle physics during 1949-55. From 1955-75 he was at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
Prof. Menon succeeded Dr. Homi Bhabha as Director, TIFR in January 1966, and occupied this position for almost a decade. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, London (1970); Hon. Member, IEEE; Hon. Fellow to Institute of Physics (U.K.) Russian Academy of Sciences. He was President of International Council of Scientific Unions (1988-1993). He is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, (President 1974-76) of the Indian National Science Academy (President 1981-82) and Hon. Fellow, National Academy of Sciences, (President 1987- 88). He has received Honorary Doctorates in Science from thirteen Indian Universities and the Indian Institutes of Technology, Kharagpur and Madras, University of Bristol, and an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology (U.S.A.).
He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award of CSIR for Physical Sciences in 1960, the G Chatterjee Award of Indian Science Congress Association (1984); C. V. Raman Medal (1985) and C. V. Raman Professorship of Indian National Science Academy; J. C. Bose Triennial Gold Medal, of the Bose Institute; Ashutosh Mookherjee Gold Medal the highest award of Indian Science Congress Association, (1988); and to Shatabdi Puraskar (1999); Health for All Medal of WHO given on its 40th Anniversary (1988); Abu Salam Medal of the Third World. Academy of Sciences (1997) Prof. Menon was MN Saha distinguished fellow of the National Academy of Science (India) during 1994-1999 and is presently Dr. Vikram Sarabhai distinguished Professor of Indian Space Research Organization (1999-2002).
Professor Menon’s research contributions have been in the area of high energy elementary particle physics. Nationally his contributions have been to a) The electronics and information technology sector b) The space programme c) Defense technologies d) Environment e) Promotion of science and technology f) Building of infrastructure and new institutions in newly emergency areas.
